A West Country stick back chair. A wonderful example which has an elm seat, the ash spindles and legs and with a single piece sycamore arm. The whole chair has traces of an original green and subsequent coats of paint and old varnish, which is wonderfully worn.
The design is attributed to the West Country circa 1770 and an almost identical chair is illustrated (a colour plate) in Dr Bernard (Bill) Cottons book – The English Regional Chair (Antique Collectors Club 1990). The bent-wood pieces and the shaped top rail are a regional feature.
