From page 25…A delightful pair of figures linked to Llangollen are those of Edward Morgan and Jenny Jones. Edward was a ploughman, who left his sweetheart, Jenny – a dairymaid at Pontblyddin Farm, near Llangollen – to find his fortune at sea, and returned home after 20 years to marry her. The true-life romance story was stumbled upon by Charles Mathews while staying at Pontylyddin Farm. He wrote a ballad relating the tale, sung to the air ‘Cader Idris’, and it became a firm favourite at the Olympic theatre in London.

My name’s Edward Morgan, I live at Llangollen,
from the Vale of Saint Taffy, the flower of North Wales. My father and mother too live at Llangollen;
good truth I was born in the sweetest of vales.
Yes indeed, and all countries so foreign and beautiful, that little valley I prize far above.
For indeed in my heart I do love that Llangollen,
and sweet Jenny Jones too in truth I do love.”
