A good early 19th century food cupboard – “Cwpwrdd Bara caws” – “Bread & Cheese cupboard”

Welsh oak and pine food cupboard, decorated with mahogany and bog oak inlay, box-wood key escutcheons, decorative spindle ventilation panels to the top doors and brass handles. Original stumbled finish to the sides.

This cupboard has been made without a central stile between the doors which is what is what is normally found on this type of cupboard – so making the cupboard slightly smaller than usual.

This style of inlay with the pattern of diamonds and circles is associated with furniture made by the Williams family from Talwrn in Anglesey who were cabinet makers during the late 18th and early 19th century.
