A small Welsh stick chair hand-made by Arthur Lewis, a woodworker from St. Clears, in Carmarthenshire. One of his chairs is illustrated in our book The Welsh Stick Chair and some of the background information is below:

Arthur is a self-taught craftsman, carpenter, builder and musical instrument maker of great skill and knowledge. He began his working life as an apprentice gardener at St Fagans National History Museum, outside Cardiff in the 1960s. It was here that his interest in Welsh craft and woodworking began, after years, during his lunch hour, watching Gwyndaf Breese, the St Fagans’ resident wood-turner and spoon carver, at work.

Arthur set out to make this chair almost as if he were an eighteenth century maker, using mostly those tools which would have been available then; a saw, an axe, an auger (a tool for making a hole), a spokeshave, a draw knife, and pieces of broken glass to scrape and finish.

Made from Carmarthenshire ash, he has worked with the natural shape of the wood, evident with the one piece arm. The chair is dry and unfinished.
